The GSport Birdcage rim didn’t become legendary because of marketing. It earned its reputation among street and park BMX riders because it is extremely light while still handling serious abuse.
The foundation of the design is a special hollow aero profile. GSport took inspiration from bird bones: material is kept where the load actually occurs, while unnecessary weight is removed elsewhere. The result is a rim weighing only 440 grams, which is a seriously low number for a 20" BMX rim. Less rotational mass means the bike reacts faster during acceleration, spins and technical tricks.
Another key feature of the Birdcage is GSport’s cross-lacing design. The spoke holes and rim cross-section are shaped so the spokes meet the nipples at a more natural angle. This improves load distribution, increases lateral wheel strength and helps the wheel stay tight even after heavy riding sessions.
The valve hole was also redesigned instead of using the traditional approach. By offsetting its position, the rim keeps more structural strength in a critical area while also making it easier to access with a pump.
The Birdcage is a highly technical and proven rim. If you are building a wheel that needs to survive hard street riding while keeping the bike quick and responsive, this rim is a serious foundation.
